Do It Yourself Bed Bug Control

Unfortunately, humans are the preferred host of the common bed bug. Their bites can cause large angry-looking welts. Typically they feed at night, and generally hide in cracks and crevices during daylight hours. Folds and tufts in mattresses, coils of springs, cracks and hollow posts in bed frames, and upholstery of chairs and sofas are typical bed bug hiding places. In heavy infestations, they can be found behind loose wallpaper, behind wall pictures, under door and window casings and behind baseboards. A thorough inspection of the aforementioned areas is essential before any treatment begins, so a bright flashlight is an important tool. Treatment - Bed Bugs are most commonly controlled by using insecticide spray and dust. Insecticides labeled for use in bed bug control include: Suspend SC, Tempo Ultra SC, Cyonara 9.7 and Bedlam. Dusts include Drione and Delta Dust. Green products include EcoEXEMPT D, MotherEarth D, EcoEXEMPT IC-2, and EcoEXEMPT KO. A Bellows duster will be needed to inject dust into cracks, crevices and voids.
Be careful to treat all places where the bugs may be hiding. On beds, treat each tuft in the mattress individually, and do the same with the folds and seams at the edges. Remember to treat these spots on both sides of the mattress. Pay particular attention to hollow bed frames and springs, including inside any small coils that may be visible. On box springs, treat all folds and overlaps on the covering fabric. On the bed frame itself, treat all cracks and hollow framework. Spray under any loose baseboards and around all window and door casings near the infested bedding areas. In addition treat any other infested areas that may be found, and do not overlook the possibility of hiding places in dressers and other furniture in the room. If you've taken a trip recently, check your luggage. A thorough application is essential to achieve adequate control, and it may take 2 or 3 treatments to completely eradicate the bed bug infestation.
It is usually desirable to apply insecticide for bed bugs early in the day, so the insecticide spray residues will have several hours to dry or dusts will have time to settle, before the room is used again for sleeping. It is highly suggested that the room not be used for sleeping for at least one night after the initial treatment. As a safety precaution it is important to dry and cover the mattresses completely before they are reused.
