Do It Yourself Boxelder Bug Control

Boxelder Bug

When boxelder bugs build up to large populations, many can be found on the outside walls of homes, businesses and other buildings and many of them with find their way inside. Adults are about ½ inch long. They are bright red or black, with narrow reddish lines on the back. They are common pests across most of the United States.

Boxelder bugs feed mainly by sucking juices from the boxelder tree, but are sometimes found on other plants. They are usually pests only by their presence, although their piercing-sucking mouth parts can sometimes puncture skin, causing slight irritation. They do very little damage indoors, although the bugs may stain curtains and other resting sites with fecal spots and produce a foul odor when crushed. Adult boxelder bugs will also enter structures in the fall, and they will overwinter in protected areas, such as wall voids or in attics. In the spring they emerge to seek out host trees on which to feed and lay eggs.

Control

Microencapsulated or wettable powder residual sprays are generally more effective in controlling boxelder bugs than emulsions. Control is best accomplished by treating infested trees with Demon WP, Tempo Ultra WP, or Onslaught during the early summer months when the bugs are immature. Immature stages are generally much easier to control than adult stages. Outside they can be controlled by thoroughly wetting the visible bugs and the surfaces over which they crawl with a residual spray. A more permanent solution is to remove host trees near the structure on which the bugs thrive, but of course they can still affect your property from your neighbors’ trees.

Indoor treatment can be accomplished using the aforementioned residual sprays. In addition, dust formulations, applied with a bellows duster, such as Drione Dust or Delta Dust, can be used for treating wall voids and other appropriate areas that may serve as overwintering sites for the bugs.
