Mouse control with Do It Yourself Pest Control Products. The House Mouse is gray or brown with large ears and small eyes. Adults weigh about 1/2 ounce and are 5 1/2 to 7 1/2 inches long, including the tail. Considered one of the most troublesome and economically important pests in the United States, house mice live and thrive under a variety of conditions in and around homes farms, and businesses. House mice consume food meant for humans or pets. They contaminate food-preparation surfaces with their feces and urine, which can contain salmonella-causing bacteria. Mice drop feces 50 to 100 times per day. Fresh droppings are typically soft, black and shiny, although color can be altered by diet. Their constant gnawing causes damage to structures and property.

Habitat
The natural habitat of house mice is fields and woods. They enter structures through openings in buildings, and are quite comfortable cohabitating with humans. Droppings, gnawing evidence and tracks indicate areas where mice are active. Nests made of insulation, paper, or other fibrous materials are often found in sheltered locations. House mice will feed on a wide variety of foods, with cereal grains a particular favorite. They are excellent climbers and can scale any rough vertical surface. They will run along electrical or telephone wires, and can jump up 14 inches from the floor onto a flat surface. A female, in one year, can have up to 10 litters of up to six young each.

Control
Effective mouse control involves sanitation, mouse proofing, and eradication. For an existing infestation, eradication is the first step. Tools available include rodenticides, snap traps, and glue boards. Rodenticides are poisons that kill rodents. They are available in several forms. Grain baits in a meal or pelleted form are available in small, cellophane or paper packets. Bait blocks, which are paraffin infused with rodenticide, are also an option.

Life span is from 2 to 3 years.

Habitat
Outdoors, Norway rats prefer fields and farmlands. Inside they live principally in basements, crawlspaces, or in burrows under sidewalks or outbuildings. These rats can enter a structure through a hole the size of a quarter. They feed mainly on plant material, grains being a particular favorite. They have been known to feed on chicken eggs and young chickens. They deposit urine and feces where ever they roam, and are disease vectors for Bubonic plague, endemic typhus fever, ratbite fever, and a few other dreaded diseases.
