Do It Yourself Termite Control Products

Termites have been around for over 250 million years, and home-owners spend more than two billion dollars a year evicting these tiny wood-eating machines from their homes.

Subterranean Termite

Subterranean Termites: Swarmer & WorkersTermites cause more damage to homes than all other natural disasters combined. They can infest a structure at any time, although they are most noticeable in the spring and early summer. Termites "swarm" in spring usually after warmer temperatures and rainfall. Swarming termites are actually winged reproductives, and they swarm or disperse to start new colonies. The appearance of winged reproductives indicate a termite infestation nearby. Termites are social insects with 4-part caste system: king and queen (primary reproductives), supplementary reproductives, soldiers, and workers. The worker caste does the damage. They travel from the colony in pencil-width, protective mud tunnels to wood, eat it, then travel back to the colony to feed the queen. With nests as big as 400,000 members, subterranean termites can do a lot of damage in a relatively short time. Termite control methods include treatment with liquid insecticides and termite bating systems.

Drywood Termites

Drywood Termites: Soldier
Drywood termites live in colonies in dry, sound wood. They are found in North Carolina through the Gulf Coast sates, Arizona, and in the central valley and coastal areas of California. They do not live in the ground, nor do they build mud tubes like subterranean and Formosan termites. Drywood termites do not produce liquid feces, instead they produce dry pellets. These pellets are eliminated from galleries through kick holes, and they tend to accumulate under the holes. Pellets are usually the first sign of a drywood termite infestation. Unlike subterranean termites, which usually follow the grain of the wood, drywoods tend to cut across the grain. They also have no true worker caste like subterranean and Formosan termites. Dead trees, branches, brush and firewood are the primary habitat of drywood termites. When land is cleared and houses with wood components are built, drywoods can move in. Control measures for drywood termites include: Wood replacement where the infestation is limited; fumigation of the structure if infestations are widespread, or localized treatments. A localized treatment involves locating the infested timbers, drilling holes into the termite galleries, and injecting a liquid termiticide or insecticidal dust or foam.

Formosan Termites

Formosan Termite Workers

Native to China, Formosan termites are the most aggressive and destructive wood pests in the United States. They can develop nests containing millions of termites that relentlessly seek and devour structural timbers, utility poles and other wood structures, including ships and barges. They even attack live trees, such as oak, cypress, pine and maple. Power outages are often caused by Formosans chewing through electrical cables. Formosan termites are widely feared by homeowners along the coastal regions of Texas, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and southern California. Formosan termite distribution is restricted to southern areas because their eggs will not hatch below 68 degrees. Unlike subterranean termites, Formosans swarm at night and construct aerial nests far up from the soil. Formosans are up to ten times more destructive than other subterranean termite species. For this reason we recommend homeowners with Formosan infestations contact a licensed pest management professional to treat their homes.
