Scorpion sightings usually strike fear in the majority of people, though most species that enter houses are not very poisonous. Their stings are comparable to those of bees or wasps. However, certain species in the desert Southwest can be dangerous, especially to sensitive or allergic people. Most scorpions are nocturnal (active at night). During the day they hide under bark, boards, and rocks or rubbish. In houses, they are most often found in undisturbed areas, such as closets, seldom used shoes or folded clothing.
The common striped scorpion is typical of the scorpions, which is widely distributed across the southern United States. It has to broad, dark bands extending the length of the back, on an otherwise yellowish brown body. Mature specimens are slightly less than 1½ inches long.
Two extremely poisonous scorpions are Centruroides gertschi Stahnke and Centruroides sculpturatus Ewing.  They are found in southern Arizona and adjacent areas of California, New Mexico, and Texas, and can grow to two to three inches long. Scorpions in these regions are generally found in homes because of the availability of water and shade in and around the house.
Scorpions feed on small spiders and soft-bodied insects. They will eat other species of scorpions and even small individuals of their own species. They have poor eyesight, so they do not stalk or chase prey but lie in wait to grab it with their pincers. Small insects are eaten immediately, but larger prey are stung and eaten after they cease to struggle.

Control

The first step in controlling scorpions around structures is to remove all debris, such as loose boards, rocks, stacked wood, or any other material under which they can hide. This will greatly reduce the number of scorpions in the area. If necessary, outdoor areas can be treated with a liquid residual pest control product such as Onslaught, Bifen IT, Suspend SC, Demon WP or Cynoff WP. Indoor areas, such as cracks and crevices in woodwork and closets, spaces around plumbing, doorways, or windows, and any other areas where scorpions might hide, should be treated with an insecticidal dust pest control product such as, Drione or Delta dust in wall voids. A bellows duster should be used for application of insecticidal dusts. Apply Whitmire Crack & Crevice I, or Crack & Crevice II aerosol pest control products in the cracks and crevices.
