Pest Control for Beetles

Ground beetles are absolutely harmless to humans, but can be aggravating when they invade a structure in large numbers. They typically live under leaves, logs, stones, and other debris, but occasionally wander into homes. These beetles vary greatly in size, shape and color. Most of them are dark, almost blackish, shiny, and somewhat flattened, although some species are brilliantly colored. Ground beetles are mostly nocturnal (nighttime) feeders, and a few species fly. They gain entrance to structures by crawling through small openings around windows or doorways, or through open doorways. Once inside, they wander around aimlessly, as their preferred habitat is outdoors. Most of these beetles are predators on other insects that crawl around on the ground at night.
Control
Where pest control of ground beetles is necessary, it should consist of eliminating outdoor hiding places or, whenever possible, manipulation of lighting that may be attracting ground beetles to the structure. Caulk and weather stripping applications around door and window frames, or around any other possible access points to the home, will also aid in preventing indoor ground beetle problems. Treatment of outdoor areas with insecticide may also be necessary. Firewood or other sources of ground beetle harborage should be moved as far away from the structure as practical. For homes in wooded areas, debris should be cleared from around the perimeter of the house. Pest control products labeled for outdoor ground beetle control include: Suspend SC, Demon WP, Cynoff WP, and Onslaught. If you prefer a “Green” pest control product EcoEXEMPT IC-2 + Adjuvant is extremely effective in controlling ground beetles. Ground areas around the building should be thoroughly treated for a distance of 20 to 50 feet from the building. Indoors, these same residual materials should be used around windowsills and doorsills. Insecticidal dust pest control products such as Drione or Delta Dust should be applied to wall voids through plumbing penetrations, using a bellows duster. Perimeter walls should receive special attention in ground beetle control applications.
