Yellow Jacket

Yellow jackets are the smallest of the common vespidae family of wasps at about ½ inch long. Most species typically build their nests underground, so workers will come and go from the nest via an earthen tunnel that ends in a hole at the soil surface. Underground nests are often started in an abandoned mammal burrow or a similar underground cavity. The nest is expanded initially to fill the cavity, and then the cavity is enlarged as the colony develops. Particles of earth and small stones may be piled up around the opening of a burrow that houses a large colony of an underground nesting species. Yellow jackets will often use available openings at or near ground level. They have built extensive nests within the voids of concrete block foundations or below railroad ties used in landscaping around patios. Piles of old grass clippings also provide idea harborage areas for yellow jackets. Whether in the ground or within a wall void, yellow jacket nests are made of grayish brown carton and resemble the bald-faced hornet nest. These nests generally resemble very large, inverted teardrops or bloated soccer balls. As many as several thousand workers may be produced in a colony in one season. Colonies in certain areas of California and southern Florida will persist for more than a year hence they are called perennial. These colonies ultimately develop more workers than typical annual colonies. Yellow jacket workers tend to be somewhat unpredictable in their response to humans who approach their nest. Often, an approaching person is completely ignored, but other times a person simply walking nearby will be stung. Most serious stinging incidents occur when the nest is disturbed. Most experts consider yellow jackets to be the most dangerous of the social wasps in the United States because of its nesting and foraging behavior and the potential for its venom to induce severe, life-threatening allergic reactions in certain sting victims.

Control

The difficulty in treating for yellow jackets and other wasps is accomplishing the task without being stung. If applications must be done during the day, one should use protective equipment such as boots, heavy coveralls, veiled headwear, and heavy gloves. Beekeeper suits will not offer adequate protection against yellow jackets and other wasps. The most difficult problems in wasp control are usually those that involve large aerial, ground, and structural yellow jacket nests. Aerial nests are often not readily accessible from the ground. It would seem that the easiest way to treat such a nest would be to spray it from the ground with a power sprayer, but this is not advisable. The force of the spray stream will often break open the nest and scatter the hyper-excited wasps and remnants in all directions. Aerial wasps nests can be removed intact and without the use of insecticide, if sealed, protective clothing is worn. Slipping a large plastic garbage over the nest and freeing it from its attachment point is a good, non-insecticidal way to eliminate yellow jackets and wasps. Don’t forget to seal the bag.

Control of ground-nesting yellow jacket nests can often be done safely in the daytime, but will generally be safer and more effective in the evening hours. The quickest and surest way to kill a yellow jacket colony is to inject Drione or Delta dust into the nest using a bellows duster. Other effective residual insecticides for use on nests under decks and roof eaves include: Onslaught, Bifen IT  and Cykick CS. Available eco-friendly insecticides include: EcoEXEMPT Jet; Eco PCO Jet-X; MotherEarth Wasp Jet Spray; Eco PCO D-X; and EcoEXEMPT D.
